Top Skin Care Lines May Not Be So
Opinions vary about what it takes to compete with the top skin care lines. Those companies that are currently at the top of the heap may soon take a fall, though. Perhaps, it isn’t so important to compete with them anymore.
The major cosmetic companies, the brand names that everyone knows, the ones that are household names, they could be in trouble. Lots of people are starting to learn about exactly what those companies have done to make their millions, over the years.
They have used advertising gimmicks and catch phrases to make everyone think that their products were healthy…to make everyone think that they cared about our health and well-being, as well as our appearance. They used words like “clean”, “pure”, “natural” and “doctor tested” to attract our attention. In most cases, they kept it for years.
If you ask someone about the brands that they use, they will more than likely say that they have been using the same brand for decades. Customer loyalty is alive and well when it comes to cosmetics. Today’s top skin care lines, in terms of sales, are the same ones that have been the biggest sellers since the 1970s. Many better brands have come and gone.
It is difficult to change people’s minds. Besides, the major companies made every effort to keep their ingredients secret. So, no one knew that the ingredients were actually bad for their skin’s health and for the health of their minds and bodies.
Facial creams, body lotions, women’s makeup, men’s shaving cream, shampoo, mascara and lipstick are all known to contain compounds that cause health problems. Some of the health problems caused by the ingredient in the top skin care lines, in terms of sales, include:
Birth defects
Nerve damage
Depression and other emotional problems
Sterility
Cancer
That’s just a partial list. Organizations like the Environmental Working Group and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics have been trying to get the word out. If enough people learn what ingredients to avoid, the manufacturers will have to stop including them.
Basically, the biggest threats come from the petroleum industry. How many products in your bathroom are flammable? In many homes, there are dozens of flammable health and beauty aids scattered around the bathroom. They contain fuel oil and compounds derived from them. Some of the ingredients to avoid include mineral oil, paraffin, petrolatum, methyl, ethyl and isopropyl alcohols.
Hopefully, the top skin care lines will be replaced by something better. A number of manufacturers have agreed, voluntarily, to abide by the standards set by the European Union. When those regulations were enacted, thousands of hazardous ingredients were banned from use in cosmetics. By comparison, only a fraction of them has been banned in the US.
If you look for a manufacturer that is a proud signer of the “Compact for Safe Cosmetics”, you will have made the first step towards your future safety. Hopefully, very soon, the top skin care lines will be listed among that group. Things can change for the better.
