One of the concepts that sufferers of acne need to accept is that dirt does not cause acne. While keeping the face clean will help make acne outbreaks less severe when they do happen, the simple fact is that the cause of acne is not a dirty face.

Having said that, for those who are prone to acne facial cleansing is important. Facial cleansing to prevent acne outbreaks needs to be done in a specific way.

You must wash your hands first because your hands are about to touch your face. While scrubbing your face, be sure that your nails are also clean.

Second, be sure that your hair is pulled away from your face and secured. This can be done with a headband, shower cap, or hair net.

After your hands are washed and your hair is away from your face, wet your face with warm, not hot, water and then use soap or a facial cleansing product. You should be sure to follow the directions on the package of the soap and never use less or more than the recommended amount.

The next step is to use your fingertips to gently massage the cleanser into your face. Be sure that you go in a circular motion all the way up to the hairline, emphasizing the areas of your face where acne most often occurs. You should be very gentle in this step and avoid hard scrubbing. You should also be sure to use your fingertips and not a washcloth.

After the soap has been applied, rinse your face thoroughly with warm water and be sure that all traces of the soap or cleanser are gone. Then gently pat your face with a towel. Be sure that you pat and do not rub your face and always use a clean towel.

Finally, allow your face to dry for at least fifteen minutes before any acne moisturizers or medications are applied.
